Vacation on the horizon? Here's what you need to know before setting sail.

DON'T PUT OFF SAILING UNTIL LATER

The most eagerly awaited time of the year is just around the corner—the long days and calm waters invite you to head out to sea.

However, before setting sail for your summer vacation, there’s one essential check you can’t put off:

An inspection of your boat’s equipment.

Safety on board and compliance with the law are the keys to a trouble-free vacation. Avoid hefty fines and, above all, protect your life and that of your guests.

ESSENTIAL CHECKLIST: WHAT TO CHECK?

  • Expiration dates: Check the expiration dates on the pyrotechnics (rockets and flares) and the life raft;
  • Life jackets: Make sure you have the correct number and sizes for all passengers;
  • Fire extinguishers: Make sure they are fully charged and within their inspection validity period;
  • First-aid kit: Replace expired items and restock any missing supplies;
  • Communications and electronics: Test the VHF radio and check the batteries in flashlights and portable equipment;
  • Documentation: Ensure that the vessel’s inspection certificate and navigation chart are valid.

THREE REASONS NOT TO PUT IT OFF

  • 📉 Stock shortages: Boating stores may run out of essential supplies in the weeks leading up to the vacation months, due to increased demand;
  • 📅 Inspection deadlines: Companies certified to inspect life rafts and fire extinguishers are overwhelmed at this time of year;
  • 👮🏽 Strict enforcement: The Maritime Authority steps up random inspections during the summer.
