How much does it really cost to own a boat in Portugal?

Buying a boat is a dream for many sea lovers. However, before taking that step, it’s important to understand how much it really costs to maintain a boat in Portugal.

In addition to the purchase price, there are several costs associated with using and maintaining a boat that must be taken into account. From mooring at a marina to fuel, maintenance, insurance, and cleaning, all these factors are part of any owner’s annual budget.

In this article, we explain the main costs of owning a boat in Portugal, so you can better plan your investment and avoid surprises.

Marina Mooring

One of the main costs of owning a boat is the mooring fee at a marina. The price depends on several factors, such as:

The size of the boat, the marina’s location, available services, and the time of year

In Portugal, prices can vary widely. Generally speaking:

Small boats (6–8 m) → about €1,500 to €3,000 per year

Medium-sized boats (8–12 m) → about €3,000 to €6,000 per year

Larger boats → significantly higher prices

Marinas in highly sought-after areas, such as the Algarve or major coastal cities, tend to have higher prices.

Fuel

The cost of fuel depends mainly on three factors: type of boat, engine power (very important), and frequency of use

Motorboats naturally consume much more fuel than sailboats.

For example, a recreational boat with a medium-sized engine can consume 20 to 60 liters per hour, depending on speed.

For those who use their boat regularly during the summer, the annual cost of fuel can easily reach €1,000 to €5,000 or more.

Annual Maintenance

Just like any vehicle, a boat needs regular maintenance to ensure safety and proper operation.

Some of the most common services include: engine tune-up, filter and oil changes, electrical inspection, navigation system checks, and maintenance of pumps and equipment, among others

A rule of thumb often used in the boating industry is to set aside between 3% (for higher-value boats) and 10% of the boat’s value (for lower-value boats) per year for maintenance.

Boat Insurance

Boat insurance is essential to protect the owner against accidents, damage, or civil liability.

The cost depends on factors such as: the boat’s value, year of manufacture, type of boat, navigation area, and coverage included

On average, annual insurance premiums can range from €200 to €1,000, although larger or higher-value boats may have higher premiums.

Cleaning and Antifouling

Regular cleaning of your boat is essential to maintaining its condition and value over time. One of the most important processes is antifouling, a special paint applied to the hull that prevents the growth of algae and marine organisms.

This process is typically performed once a year when the boat is taken out of the water. Costs can vary depending on the size of the vessel, but generally range from €500 to €2,000.

Taxes: IUC for Recreational Boats

For some recreational boats registered in Portugal, there may also be an obligation to pay the IUC (Single Circulation Tax).

The amount of the tax depends on several factors, such as: type of vessel, engine power (The rate is approximately €2.87 to €2.95 per kW for recreational boats with an engine power of 20 kW or more registered since 1986), year of registration, and the boat’s characteristics

The IUC is paid annually through the Finance Portal, just as it is for cars.

Although it is not usually one of the highest costs of owning a boat, it should be factored into the owner’s annual budget. The amounts can range from €120 to €1,000 per year.

Optional crew

For larger vessels, some owners choose to have a crew or a professional skipper.

This cost is not mandatory for all boats, but it can be useful for those without sailing experience, for longer trips, and for larger vessels

Depending on the type of service, costs can range from €150 to €300 per day for a professional skipper.
